International Sustainability Indicators Network (ISIN)
A network of practitioners and researchers involved in developing more sustainable communities, businesses, and other organizations through the application of indicators and measurement-related tools. Through sharing information about the use of these tools, ISIN seeks to increase understanding of the need for and active conversion to more sustainable behavior on the part of individuals, organizations, businesses, and all levels of communities, from local neighborhoods to the global community.

Community Transformation Examples
The Stop Sprawl section of the Sierra Club website features computer-generated simulations of various smart growth principles and practices. The page has scenarios from a half dozen cities in California, Florda and Colorado. The simulations are the work of Steve Price of Urban Advantage, which offers additional images for envisioning smart growth.

EPA Sustainability: Measuring Progress
The Environmental Protection Agency's website on Sustainability includes a Measuring Progress section that links to EPA tools, programs and partnerships that support the practice of sustainability, especially by providing environmental quality data and encouraging decisions based on it.

Global Footprint Network
Global Footprint Network seeks to support a sustainable economy by advancing the Ecological Footprint, a measurement and management tool that makes the reality of planetary limits relevant to decision-makers throughout the world. Working with World Wildlife Fund, the group released Living Planet Report 2004, a report comparing the Ecological Footprints of 150 nations.

Key National Indicators Initiative
This site provides background materials and serves as a vehicle for dialogue on an ongoing effort to explore prospects for a United States indicator system.

Software Tools

The Canadian International Institute of Sustainable Development developed the Dashboard of Sustainability software that applies the analogy of a vehicle or aircraft's dashboard to sustainable development. The software offers an instrument panel that tracks 46 indicators designed to inform decision-makers, the media and the general public on the status of a nation's progress toward, or away from, sustainability. See also: The Dashboard Online Collection.

INDEX is an interactive GIS-based planning support system developed by Criterion Planners/Engineers that measures existing conditions, evaluates alternative plans, and supports implementation of adopted plans.
